With the defeat of Pertinax Veno completed, the purging of the Senate done,
all that was left for Antoninus to do was to be officially coronated. Antoninus
had the support of the people, he had the support of the new Senate, everything
was going well for the Champion of the People. The coronation was scheduled to
take place in the month of Februarus, though it was a cool in Rome, the hearts
of the people were warm with love for their Emperor. Rome had faith that
Antoninus Maxus would lead them into a better era.
The ceremony was the largest celebration that had ever been held in the city of
Rome. Nearly half the cities entire population showed up that day. It was a
grand event, with loaves of bread passed out to all and more wine than can be
imagined. The new Emperors speech was short, but inspiring. He declared an end
to the republic, an end to the infighting and corruption of the past, and a move
to a new time of stability and a single powerful ruler who would keep Rome on
the right path.
With the end of his words came a deafening roar from the crowd shook the
Palatine Forum and could be heard all throughout the city. Antoninus was a man
of the people, he had always been, and he would always be.
With full power finally in his grasp, Antoninus began to implement his changes
for Rome. He chose a small group of intelligent, young Romans to become the
first senators of the Imperial age. He changed the rank of Tribune from a do-
nothing aristocrat position to an elected position, whose duty it was to listen
to the people. He instructed the Tribunes to pass on the word of the people to
the Senate. Antoninus also set up five administrative boroughs for his
administration. He would pick from the elected Consuli men of Honor, Prestige
and capability, to fill the five posts. For now, he filled them himself.
Later that evening Antoninus spoke quietly to his Legatus, Verius Pollio.
The changes I presented today are nothing compared to the changes that are to
come. Rome is in store for quite a surprise, they will learn that their ways of
the past will not be welcome now. I will rule with an iron fist and stamp out
corruption and insubordination.
Verius smiled to himself, Yes my Emperor, much will change.
