To Prove Oneself

Firelight flickered dimly across the dark, cool halls of the Imperial Palace.
It was well before midnight and well before sunrise. Antoninus Flavus wondered
why

the Emperor would send for him so late and secretively as Praetorians opened the
massive entrance to the Emperor's Chamber.

"Hail, Caesar Antoninus."

"So you have arrived. Forgive me for your inconvenience."

"No, Sire, forgive me for not arriving sooner! You sent for me..."

"Yes, Antoninus. Let me explain my reasons. I had my eye on you ever since I
heard about your entrance into the legion. Surely, the son of the great Verius
Flavus would \ make a fine leader of men. At first I held only token interest,
until I saw your potential. That is why you were placed under such extensive
training. Surely, becoming the protégé of Tomidius and Marius had some influence
upon you. A week as their apprentice would have left you capable of conquering
the mightiest of foes, and yet you have learned from them a year! Tell me, since
they taught you, have you become stronger?"

Antoninus Flavus, with a laugh, "Marius fights and trains with ungodly
strength. Tomidius' fencing skills are unmatched. Practicing with him is like
trying to

fight a shimmering heat. I am much stronger."

Smiling, the Emperor asks, "Since they taught you, have you become more
educated in the ways of war?"

"Marius' brilliance could do in five times his number in battle. I am now
adept in the arts of war."

"Antoninus, I am proud of you. Tell me one last thing. Loyalty is not a
discipline, and it cannot be taught. Where does your allegiance lie?"

Instantly, "I am the ally of Rome. You are divine embodiment of Rome.
Therefore I serve you, even above my family, to the death."

After a long pause, and whit a sigh, "Antoninus, your time has come. Your
loyalty surpasses that of the legates! I am placing under your command the four
legions of Italia."

Antoninus was speechless.
