Antoninus Gaius Julianus had been pretty much a low profile roman official
until recently. When Gaius learned that his friend Claudius, the Secondo Legati,
had been killed he was furious. He knew what he must do. He took a dagger and
hid it under his tunic. Gaius Julianus absolutely abhorred Hadrius Septimus
Thrax and was certain of his dissention which caused the death of Claudius.
After several hours of wandering he saw Hadrius Septimus Thrax. His blood boiled
but he smiled. Gaius walked up and said "Hail Hadrius, old friend!" The senator
turned to greet him as H. Septimus was talking with a small, if unmoved crowd,
about his positions in the Senate. As soon Gaius was close enough Antoninus
Gaius suddenly shouted "death to traitors!" and stabbed Hadrius. He lunged at is
throat, stabbed again and the senator dropped to the ground dead. He held his
knife high. "And to all traitors!" The crowd was shocked. The new Secondo,
Tomidius, had doubled the patrols in the Palatine and and other districts. Gaius
was immediately arrested.
Some of the fanatics in the crowd followed Gaius lead and shouted out the names
of Decenaeus Aelius and D. Otho Aelius and Nero Daia and Flavius Tiberius Daia
and even Suvius Maxus and Quintilius Marcus Agrippa and more. Before they could
kill any of these Romans The they saw Postumus the Prima Legatus. "Death!
Death!!!!!!" The small crowd surged at him in attack mode.
Postumus Varro was on his way to see the Emperor at that very moment and was
under protection of the Praetorians who did not do more than the necessary to
protect him.
---------
Postumus stormed into the Palace and walked by all without a word. Postumus
walked to the imperial chamber where the Emperor was reported to be taking care
of his dying wife, Baerana.
"Emperor, I resign my position as Prima!" Postumus saluted and began to leave.
The Emperor could not take another deserter from his camp and he talked to
Postumus and would not allow him to go. "What brings this on? How dare you leave
your Emperor's service!"
"Emperor, you have made grave errors! Errors which will cost you your life. I
will not sit by while you die and sink along with you. I did that once already!"
Antoninus couldn't even speak he was so angered and horrified at Postumus
insubordination and vicious tone.
Postumus continued "Does it not occur to you, your most loyal General is
Tomidius Servo?"
Antoninus smiled "Of course it does, that's why he's Praetorian commander now"
Postumus "I grow weary of trying to teach you how to outsmart your opponents.
You have just removed the only general who could be counted upon to fight on
your side should a civil war break out. Does it not occur to you many believe
Turpillius should be Emperor now? Or even myself!?"
Antoninus eyes were wide "But in Gaul he would be little more.."
Postumus interrupted "He would be a champion and hero and would be given a
reward worthy of his loyalty. He could direct the attacks into
Germania...instead it will be someone else who will shower themselves with glory
and they will not be so loyal."
Antoninus sat down in his chair..."I suppose I should have consulted with
you..."
Postumus replied coldly "I can see you consult with nobody, I will not be a
puppet Prima. I am still military consulus, I will spend my time directing the
planning and efforts to secure the Empire."
Postumus saluted and waited to be dismissed.
"Wait..." Antoninus sighed loudly. "I am cursed..." Antoninus seemed on the
verge of despair. "I will move Turpillius back to the east as you have
instructed...it is clear you feel very strongly. I will also make Tomidius
Governor of Gaul..."
"NO!" Postumus screamed. "Never go back on your decisions, you will seem weak.
Though you have made some bad ones, stick to them. I will find a General loyal
to you, no matter how poor a General, and he will command the any attacking
armies."
"Antoninus nodded. You can go to Gaul, but you must remain Proconsulus. I will
not allow otherwise. Obey me."
Postumus nodded and sighed "Yes my Emperor.....Do you know that I was attacked
just a short walk outside this very palace? I was accused a traitor!"
Antoninus shook his head "Well that is clearly not so...perhaps the time for you
to leave Rome is here...Tomidius will protect me here."
"He could have protected you throughout the Empire...well...he will suffice here
in Rome. I will seek a new General for the west."
Antoninus called to Postumus as he left "One last thing...what of Lucius
Nervae?"
Postumus replied "Governor of Hispania...that is obvious."
Antoninus sat and thought of his wife for a moment until he was again disturbed.
"Emperor, reports of a riotous crowd and the murder of Hadrius Septimus Thrax by
Antoninus Gaius Julianus"
Antoninus shook his head.
