It was a fresh morning as Quaestor Marcus Dio walked into the Imperial
palace. A few days ago he has asked to see the Emperor. And now, after all the
security checks, he was finally allowed to enter and talk to the Emperor.
"Quaestor Marcus Dio" called the guard as Marcus entered the room where the
Emperor sat. "Hail Emperor" called Marcus as he bowed. "Come in Quaestor" said
the Emperor, and looked at Marcus.
"Emperor, I came here to offer you my services" said Marcus. "Go on then"
commented the Emperor Antoninus.
"I have traveled much around the world, working for my father. I know my way
around politics, as I know my way with diplomacy and economy. I have heard of
Troubles in our Province of Hispania" said Marcus.
"Ah yes..." marked Antoninus. "Great troubles. they are mad about the Roman
sphere of influence...and namely tribute"
"This is why I have come to offer you my services" answered Marcus. "I ask to
be sent to Hispania in order to try and see what is going on there. I will see
if anything can be done in order to cool things down in there, other then moving
more forces into there" said Marcus.
"hmmmm..." Antoninus Thought out-loud.
"I will require guards for protection in case of trouble" noted Marcus. After
a few minutes of thinking, and looking at maps and papers, the Emperor finally
said- "No... You will travel to Hispania, but with no guards. armed guards asks
for trouble... You will travel as a simple common man and see how life is
in there. Report to me as soon as possible" decreed the Emperor. "And so it
shall be done. I will leave for Hispania tonight" said Marcus, and left.
At night, Marcus Said good bye to his wife, and left Hadrius Septimus Thrax
to guard her. Marcus said goodbye to his brother Decenaeus, and went on his way.
As Marcus walked away, Hadrius said- "Well, at least if he won't come back I'll
have his wife". At that point Decenaeus stuck an elbow in Hadrius' side. "What,
I thought it was funny..." answered Hadrius, and the three of them, Hadrius,
Decenaeus, and Marcus' wife walked out of the port, each went their own way.
----
A few weeks later a scroll arrived from Marcus Dio "My Emperor, come to return
to you. The situation here is dire, there could be a rebellion. I would have
come sooner, but they took me for a Roman official, and did terrible infliction
of injury upon me. I will speak with you when I arrive safely back in Rome."
Antoninus Maxus looked at Verius Pollio who stood in the place Balbonus Manus
once had. "Well my Emperor...what can we do...I will send a scroll to
Tomidius...he will know what to do".
Antoninus frowned "Alas he is the last resort".
